Parents’ Bedroom Makeover

For the most deserving two people in the world

My parents are the two most deserving people in the world. They are totally “those” parents. The ones everyone wanted to be around in high school, everyone expects to fix life’s problems in their early 20s, and everyone continuously leans on throughout their entire adulthood.

My mom has wanted to redo her bedroom for years. Somehow, in that time, they’ve helped us remodel two homes, provided our kids with a playroom of their own in their house, and had their hands in so many other projects. Yet, their room never got done.

When my mom finally started expressing that she wanted to redo her room (again), I jumped on the opportunity. I walked into her room and started painting that afternoon so there was no going back!

THE PLAN

Here is the mood board I sent my mom for some inspiration. She wanted her room to be neutral but not just black and white. She wanted it to feel organic but not too “crunchy”. She wanted it to feel light and open despite 8-foot ceilings and a relatively small space.

So here’s how we freshened up the space —

The very first thing I do to freshen up any space is add paint. My parents’ room is relatively small and only has one, north-facing window so we knew we wanted to go light and bright.

Walls - Alabaster by Sherwin Williams

Trim - Natural Cream by Benjamin Moore

TIP: Lighter paint colors always make a room look a bit bigger and brighter. Darker paint colors can make a room look cozier and smaller.

We then added all the details. Really. That’s it. We painted and redid some decor. And it looks like an entirely new room.

Some of the details

The rug — the most bang for your buck!

When redoing a room, people often start too big. They want to ditch their old furniture and buy new but changing furniture is tricky: it’s too bulky to get rid of and just too expensive to replace. In comes the best of all decor pieces — the rug.

Rugs are the best and easiest way to change up your decor. They’re big enough to make a statement but not nearly damaging enough as the price of furniture. To get the most out of your rug, check out this size guide. I love how this compares the three most common sizes - 5X7, 8X10, and 9X12 right on top of each other so you can see just how much “extra” you’d have. Of course, the size of your room matters, too.

Here is the one I picked out for my parents’ room in the “Forest” color. The rug reads very neutral without being your typical black, white, and grey. It has blues, purples, whites, blacks, and teals. I, of course, had to match my shoes to the décor piece, too.

The bed

Their bed is the very best part of the room. My dad hand built it. Like legit hand built. He cut down the trees, milled the lumber, designed it, and built it. I almost wish I was joking but I’m really not. It is solid black walnut. It doesn’t get more hand-crafted than this beauty.

He also built the nightstands many, many years.

Bedding

You just can’t go wrong with good, white bedding. I love using white bedding to anchor a room. The bedding is almost all Target’s Casaluna line.

  • King Euro Linen Pillows here. These sell out all the time because they’re that great. We also have them on our bed and on our couch downstairs.

  • Linen Blend Comforter here

  • Linen Blend Quilt here

  • The adorable ruffle throw is old from Home Goods

Curtains

These curtains are just the best. They provide you with two different hanging options. I find that the pleating always looks the most designer without paying designer prices. They drape beautifully and offer various color options.

The lighting

My mom is a avid reader so she wanted lamps to provide her with enough height and light to illuminate her book pages. She didn’t want anything too big or statement making so I thought these really fit the bill. I also really love the little ceramic ball at the top of them. It adds such a fun detail.

We also added additional ambiance with some flameless but real-wax candles (found here).

If you’re ever feeling like a room is falling flat, just add lighting. It can really set the whole tone.

It was such an honor to have a little part in this project. I admire my parents for everything they do and everything they are so this project means the world to me.
